County commissioners are exploring whether Lake County should become a charter county as a tool to better manage rapid population growth and protect rural areas from overdevelopment. At the first in a series of Growth Management workshops, officials and residents heard from Virginia “Ginger” Delegal of the Florida Association of Counties about how charter counties give citizens more direct home-rule authority and a stronger voice in shaping local growth policies. Commissioners Leslie Campione and Sean Parks emphasized that any move toward charter status would depend on public support, would not change existing development rights, and is intended to foster better collaboration between the county and cities while focusing protections on still-undeveloped rural lands. Upcoming workshops will continue the discussion with a focus on agricultural lands and joint planning agreements, and residents are invited to participate and review materials online.
